From Resistance to Acceptance

This work is designed to bring awareness and understanding to the complexity of being a trans person in society. From early days of the 1960's resistances to the celebrations of acceptance in 2019 and beyond.

Learning opportunities included:

- Acknowledgment of the Lands we are on and giving thanks to our Creator

- History of LGBTQ2S.

- Identification and meaning of the Pride Flag and Trans Flag.

- Examining Gender Identification verses Sexual Orientation.

- Recognizing and understanding Gender, Male, Female, Non-Binary, Gender Non-Conforming, and or Gender Variant as it falls along the Gender Binary.

- Understanding Pronouns (he, him, his, she, her, hers, they, them, their, ………….)

- Learning opportunities for people to accept and support transgender folks.

- How 2 spirit individuals are recognized and supported.

- How to support a trans person

- Questions that are OK to ask. and Questions that are NOT OK to ask.

- Question and Answer period.

Stacey Love-Jolicoeur is an Independent Education and Support worker for the LGBTQ2S community.

In this role Stacey provides services at ten Federal and Provincial Correctional Facilities and Institutions and seven half-way houses where she supports over 300 incarcerated LGBTQ2S offenders. These are provided from Ottawa in the East to Kitchener in the West and North to Penetanguishene, Ontario, where she does training to administration, medical and support services by providing information and support to Psychology and the Social Workers. In addition to this she also provides LGBTQ2S group facilitation, and peer to peer with one to one personal support to offenders, Stacey also created a re-integration counseling program for the transgender inmates that have a set release date to assist them to be a successful member of society upon release. To date 18 of 19 trans offenders have not re-offended in last 3 years. Stacey’s work is supported by The Canadian Mental Health Association in various offices according to the geographical location of the facility or the institution. .

Stacey also volunteers as the coordinator and facilitator for the TRANSforum group in Belleville Ontario for the last 7 years. She is an active member for the (RYO Rainbow Youth Organizing Committee, Belleville) and sits on the Organizing Committee for the Belleville’s Bay of Quinte Pride Parade and Pride in the Park for the last 5 years.

Stacey is a two-spirited Métis Trans woman with a strong passion for the betterment of the LGBTQ2S community. In addition to the noted work above, her work involves workshops on diversity, acceptance, inclusion and affirmation to companies, organizations and service agencies in which she offers support for the LGBTQ2S community. Her passion and insight into Tran’s issues is a welcomed resource to the many groups she works with
